This is the Sun Joe iON16LM-HYB 40V Electric Lawn Mower. This hybrid version of the iON16LM model has the added feature of being able to switch between electric and battery power. You can turn off one to use the other, which comes in handy when you may not have enough cord to finish your yard, or you don’t have to use a cord at all! However, if something happens with the battery or you forgot to charge it, you can use electric as a back up, as you will read about in this Sun Joe iON16LM-HYB review.
COMPONENTS: Is The Sun Joe iON16LM-HYB Electric Lawn Mower Built Sturdy?
This Sun Joe mower has 15” steel blades. After a certain time, you can take them off and sharpen them, if need be.
There is a 6-position height adjustment, from 1.18”-3.15”. The 9.25 gallon grass bag is small, so you will have to empty it frequently. Some lawn mowers have mulching capabilities, but this one does not, although there are plans for the company to come out with mulching blades at some point. The front wheels are 6” and the back wheels are 8”.
POWER
With this mower, you can use either battery power or electric power. There is a EcoSharp rechargeable lithium-ion battery included and the charger as well. If you want to use electric power, you would need a cord that provides 6.5 Amps. The battery lasts from 45-60 minutes, which should be perfectly fine with any normal sized yard. There is also a key you have to turn to use the battery, which also works as a safety feature, especially if you have children and wouldn’t want them to accidentally start it. The battery takes up to 3 hours to charge.
If you live in a state that has a winter season, you will want to make sure you don’t keep the battery outside, as the cold weather can affect the acid in the battery. If you are going to store it in your shed, which is not heated, make sure the battery is dry and charged over 50% at all times. The lower the charge percentage, the higher the freezing point will be. If the temperature keeps dropping below freezing, you may not have such great luck with the battery when it’s time to mow with your Sun Joe mower again in the spring!
Sun Joe iON16LM-HYB Mower WEIGHT/WARRANTY/STORAGE
The mower weighs 34.2 pounds, which is very light and most people can handle lifting it quite easily. The handle is padded and folds down flat onto the mower for easy storage. Assembly is easy, and the mower battery should only need 2-3 hours of charging and it’s ready to go. There is a 2 year warranty as well.
Sun Joe iON16LM-HYB Review SUMMARY
Being able to switch from electric to battery or vice versa is a pretty great feature. If your battery power runs out, you can just plug it in and keep going. The power overall is lower than other electric mowers, cut in half by the number of Amps, but it seems to do the job quite well.
If you have a smaller yard, there shouldn’t be any problems, as you most likely don’t need a huge amount of power.
The Sun Joe iON16LM-HYB is ETL approved, which is proof that it is compliant with North American safety standards. We hope that you have found our Sun Joe electric lawn mower review helpful; contact us if you have any questions!
